Nikon Photo Contest No Longer Accepts Photos Shot Using Film Cameras

Wow, I have no words, except maybe, “FUCK YOU NIKON!”. I feel like Ive been saying this more and more lately…This just makes no sense at all.

Read the article at Petapixel

*Side note: any of you ass-hats make a comment like, “Get a Canon” or “Film is dead”, I am so going to drop a “D” in your bed.

Kodak TMax P3200 Film to be Discontinued :(

This sucks. Its the only (ultra) high speed film I used regularly. Although I have recently decided to switch to Delta 3200, I am saddened by this news. Time to stock up, bitches.

Press Release:
Due to low sales volume, Kodak is ending production of KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX P3200 Film (TMZ). The demand for ultra-high speed B&W film has declined significantly, and it is no longer practical to coat such a small volume of product.

The suggested replacement is KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX 400 Film (TMY-2). The latitude of TMY-2 allows it to handle one stop of underexposure (EI 800) without being pushed. In low light situations, TMY-2 delivers very good results when exposed at EI 1600 with increased development time.

Even though P3200 is approx 2 stops faster than TMY-2 at comparable contrast levels, that extra speed comes with a very significant grain penalty. In fact, for most applications TMY-2 is actually the better film choice. The exception would be extremely low light situations where P3200 might be able to pull out some shadow detail that would otherwise be lost with TMY-2.

I’m please to be able to finally show you the cover art that I did for the upcoming (April 2013) novel, In The Shadow Of Blackbirds by Cat Winters, published by Amulet Books/Abrams. The Beautiful design is by the awesomely talented Maria Middleton.

Its the little things that count...

Been working away, busy season seems to have stretched over into summer this year, which, I guess is nice. I have a couple of new pics coming along. More shoots in the coming weeks, so have no fear, it wont just be instagram pics of my cameras for much longer!

Speaking of pics of my cameras, heres a random picture I found in one of my old folder. Its my very first "Professional" DSLR (its professional coz it says so on the body ;). The Kodak DCS 315 with a whopping 1.5mp sensor! That was some serious shit back then (I think it was 1998)  If I am remembering correctly, this camera cost me about $2500 bucks! Built off a Nikon Pronea 6i SLR, it was nothing more then a piece of shit consumer camera with a rubberized brick glued to the bottom of it. My old Motorola Razr cell phone took better pictures! Ok, maybe not that bad, but pretty bad. Though there are a few shots from this camera that I still enjoy and keep in my portfolio to this day, in particular the "Unknown To Me" series from last years 365 project. Ahh, those were the days...And what the hell was with that piece of shit zoom lens on it?! I guess I was always a Tamron fan :)
Good lord, this thing's storage were PC cards!

Anyhoo, yeah, more fun stuff to come! So dont give up on me just yet!

In my never ending quest of equipment that I can't focus right. I scored this baby today!

A filthy sticky Mamiya Universal with a 100mm f/3.5 lens and 6x7 Type 3 Back.

The lens is perfect. Everything else is pretty gross. I put a roll through it this afternoon and it works like a champ though, so Im happy. Only real problem for me is that the Rangefinder is filthy and I can barely see through it much less focus with it. I like the potential of this camera. But it is in desperate need of a good CLA. Which is way beyond me from what Ive read. So I guess its time to give Nippon Cameras a call.

Leica M6

Who's got 2 thumbs and an M6? - This Moi!

What I'll do with it remains to be seen.

I could'nt pass up a good opportunity when I saw this camera. The only thing is that I'll probably never be able to afford any of Leica's beautiful lenses (that I would actually want) to go with it. I'm happy with my Voigtlander lenses. I think they're awesome and work just as good as their Leica counter parts, at a fraction of the price. In any case. If I keep this camera, it'll be a good investment.

I've never been into the whole Leica mystique. They dont really suit my shooting style. Dont get my wrong, I know why they have the rep that they do, and I think they are beautiful. But there are other brands out there that do the same if not more, and look just as awesome at the same time. I've never been one for luxury labels and the Leica brand, for sure, is just as Lux as the names Gucci, Farrari, Chanel, etc. I've always been happy with my "off" brand shooters. Not to mention that every jackass hispster that has ever thought about a camera, covet these things. Which probably turns me off the most about this brand.

Anyhoo, its a decent camera. Shoots nicely, really the only thing that bugs me about it so far is that its got a hair trigger, and metering on it is like playing russian roulette, oh and also, theres not trigger lock. I'll probably only use it for snap shots. So whatever. I still need to develop the rolls, so theres no final verdict on this lil-guy yet. TBC

FujiFilm Velvia Petition

As some of you may know, FujiFilm announced yesterday that they would be discontinuing a number of their films. Most notibly, their Velvia 50 and 100 in sizes 4x5 and 8x10. I feel that this will actually effect me in some way so, I'm writing this post to ask for your help. I know this won't amount to a hill of beans, but heres a petition for you to sign (if you are into that sorta thing). Maybe it will make FujiFilm think twice...at least for a moment before they pull the switch.

Sold my Mamiya RZ67 PII today. Gonna miss the shit out of it. But you know me, gotta keep on keepin' on...

This is one of the last polaroids from the camera. I had a few left in the pack that I had to finish off. Pardon the dusty scan.

the heart thus thou break

Which one?????? by ★ 0091436 ★

Maria at Adorama was kind enough to let me spend some time (about 45minutes) with the xpro1 and the nex7. I was pretty disappointed by the xpro1's handling. It's really is a half baked product. It really sucks coz I pretty much had my heart set on this camera. Its the right size, right mega-pixels, right amount of sexiness, and most importantly, best IQ. But it was really a struggle to take a picture. Unfortunately, they didnt have an adapter for me to try with my Voigtlander 40mm (I used the 18mm that they had on the demo camera). That would have been the real test.
I did however, get to try my lens on the NEX7, and as expected, it worked like a dream. So much so, that it actually break my heart a little, knowing that with even just a few minutes of playing on the NEX7, that it's going to win out over the xpro1. Such a shame....i guess the NEX7 will have to do until the xpro2(?)....

Eli was fanfreakintastic to work with.

Shot with a Bronica ETRSi with a 75mm f/2.8 which I recently sold off. I miss that lil sucker. It was a cute lil baby of a camera.

Sophie's Choice

Its been months since I've had a moment to post anything here. I'm sorry for that. I hope to have more content soon. Theres a few images some of you might not have seen, that I have waiting in the wings, I just wanted to get a few more done before I presented them. But with work ramping up, I dont know when that will happen. But stay tuned!

Ive been shooting film a lot more lately, which has been really fun. Its nice to be developing my own film again. Its been way too long since I've done it regularly (about 15 years!) It was just like riding a bike! So nice and easy to do at home. I highly recommend it to all you lil punks out there that have never tried it before. There are a ton of resources on the internetz to baby step you through it. I know walmart will do it for you for cheap, but just save a couple of rolls and give it a shot, you wont be sorry, AND you can go around telling people youve done it. That alone, Im sure is worth the hassel -- Fuckers :P

Anyhoo, For now, I just wanted to post a couple of camera portraits that I took today. I'm getting ready to thin out my collection, and these two 6x7s have been been put on the block. I know ultimately, one will get a stay of removal. I love 6x7 too much to stop shooting in this format. I cant justify having both, but which one...

Both have their stronge and weak points, but I think when it finally comes down to it, I'm going to have to stick with the cheaper, more versatile, (and sexier) kit (Pentax 67). The Mamiya shoots like a dream and is probably the best film camera Ive ever owned. But it's just too expensive to maintain and build. I can and often do take the Pentax 67 out with me, cant do that with the RZ67, its just way too big. Also I only have 1 lens for the Mamiya, a 110mm f2.8 which rocks. I would love more, but RZ67 glass is too expensive for my limited budget. Whereas P67 lenses can be had for a song! In general their optics arent as good as Mamiya's, but theyre good enough. Especially when your piss poor.

It's really cutting me deep that I have to get rid of the RZ67, but times are tough and I need to keep feeding my ravenous addiction. I need me an X-Pro1! I want to invest in a descent carry around digital camera with a VF, rather then keep a camera I'll only use a few times a year. I think itll be a wise exchange....maybe?....

Ok, that's it, just wanted to shoot a update to y'all. I'm not dead. Just busy and stressed and blocked up and whatnot.
